The Playroom

A two-player game collection for the Game Boy Advance, made so a grandpa and his grandkids could sit on the couch and play together.

Pixel box art for The Playroom, a custom Game Boy Advance game.

Original game

The Playroom is a two-player collection for the Game Boy Advance, made so a grandpa and his grandkids could sit on the couch and play together. It started with one comment: “It'd be fun to make a game for me and the grandkids.” The result is a real cartridge game you can play on one handheld passed back and forth, or on two systems connected by a link cable.

It is named after the room at the family house where the kids play. Pick it up, choose who you are, pick a game, and you are playing in under a minute.

15 games

  • Hide and Seek, and Tag over a link cable
  • Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four, Rock Paper Scissors, Quick Draw, Bank, Last Candy, Memory, and Dots and Boxes
  • Checkers, Chess, Battleship, Mancala, and Backgammon

How it works

  • Pass-and-play on one handheld, or link two systems
  • A running scoreboard for the session
  • How to Play pages before every game
  • Quiet sound design so two handhelds side by side never echo
  • Every character is drawn from a real family member, plus the two family cats

Editions
