FAQ
Questions from the bench.
Start with the system you have. These answers are a starting set, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can have more than one cause, and some handhelds need to be opened before the fault is clear.

General
How much does a repair cost?
Most work is listed as starting at a number, a typical range, or request a quote. Those are starting points from typical parts and labor, not a guaranteed flat price. Final pricing can change with condition, parts, configuration, and anything found during diagnosis. See Services & Pricing for current starting points.
What does a diagnostic include?
A handheld diagnostic is $20 (that is the diagnostic fee). I examine and test the system, narrow down the problem, and report the likely parts and labor. That fee may be rolled into the repair if you proceed. Console diagnostics are quoted.
Do I need to know exactly what’s wrong before submitting a request?
No. Tell me what it is doing in your own words. Yes, no, and not sure are enough on the symptom questions. Photos help, but they are optional. I would rather have an honest “not sure” than a guess.
Can I mail my device to you?
Yes. I am in Arizona's East Valley. If you are not local, mail-in is the usual path. Repair shipping is calculated using current USPS rates rather than one fixed number. I do not promise to take every mailed-in repair.
Are you local?
Yes. I am in Arizona's East Valley, including Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Gilbert, Mesa, and Apache Junction. This is not a walk-in shop. If you are nearby, we can talk through a local drop-off. Mail-in is the usual path from farther away.
Can I provide my own parts?
Often, yes. Tell me what you already have. I will say if a part is a good fit or if I would rather source something else. Using your parts can change both price and timeline.
How long do repairs usually take?
It depends on the job, parts, and the queue. Simple swaps can be quicker. Screens, shells, and anything that needs diagnosis take longer. There is no single turnaround I can promise for every handheld.
How does a repair request work?
Tell me the handheld and what it is doing, and send photos if you have them. I review that and reply with whether it looks like a good fit, what it might take, and what I still need to know. That first reply is an initial review, not a guaranteed final quote. Current starting points live on Services & Pricing.
When does the work or parts ordering begin?
Sending the form is an inquiry, not an appointment and not a commitment to buy. I review the details first. We talk through the options and confirm pricing before any work or parts ordering begins.
What if a device cannot be repaired?
I will say so. Some faults are not a good fit, and I would rather tell you that than guess. If more damage shows up after we have a plan, I stop and ask before changing the scope.
What if someone has already opened or repaired the device?
Tell me. Prior work can mean missing screws, torn cables, or mixed parts. It does not automatically mean I will turn it down. It does mean the quote has to follow what is actually inside, not a clean stock unit.
What happens if additional damage is discovered?
I will stop and tell you before adding work. A starting price assumes typical parts and labor. If diagnosis finds more, we decide together whether to continue, change the plan, or stop.
Are photos required?
No. They help a lot and can cut down on back-and-forth, especially for shells, screens, and corrosion. A few angles and any visible damage are enough when you have them.
Do you repair consoles too?
Sometimes. Wii, original Xbox, and Xbox 360 software or modding requests can be considered. They are secondary to handhelds and are quoted individually.
How is shipping calculated?
Repair shipping is calculated using current USPS rates. Weight, box size, and destination change the number. GBA ROM-hack cartridge bundles on Services & Pricing already include standard shipping within the United States. International cartridge shipping is quoted separately.
What if I’m not sure whether I need a repair or an upgrade?
That is a normal place to start. If something is broken, damaged, or unreliable, it is usually a repair path. If the system still works and you want a better screen, shell, or software setup, that is an upgrade. You do not have to pick the perfect label — say what you want it to do, or use Find Your Handheld if the handheld itself is the open question.
What if my device has multiple issues?
List all of them. Older handhelds often have more than one age-related problem, and fixing only the obvious one can leave something else waiting. I will tell you what I would check first, what can be bundled, and what should stay as a separate quote.

Game Boy
Why won’t my original Game Boy turn on?
This can sometimes indicate tired batteries, corrosion on the contacts, or a power switch that is no longer making a clean connection. Older Game Boys can have more than one of those at once. Inspection may still be needed before I can quote a repair.
Why does my Game Boy only power on sometimes?
Intermittent power often points at a dirty or worn power switch, tired batteries, or corrosion that only makes contact at certain angles. This is one of the things I would check first, but I will not call it one cause until the unit is opened.
What should I do if batteries leaked inside my Game Boy?
Stop using it and do not keep leaking cells in the bay. Alkaline leak can eat contacts, the switch, and traces. How far it went decides whether this is a cleaning or a board repair, so photos of the battery bay help.
Why is the Game Boy screen faint, missing lines, or hard to see?
A faint or washed-out screen can be contrast, a tired panel, or a power problem. Vertical lines and cracks are usually the glass or the board behind it. There are a few possible causes, and original Game Boy screen work is quoted rather than listed as a flat upgrade.
Why is there no sound on my Game Boy?
That can be the headphone switch, the speaker, or the board around the audio path. A unit that is silent from the speaker but fine in headphones is a different job from one with no audio at all. Tell me which of those you are seeing.
Why do Game Boy games sometimes fail to start or freeze?
Dirty slot pins, a worn connector, a dirty cart, or an aging save battery can all look like a “dead” or crashy game. I usually want to see both the system and a cart that fails. I do not assume the handheld is the only problem.
Why are the buttons on my Game Boy not responding well?
Dirt under the pads, a worn membrane, or a shell that is sitting wrong can all do this. If the contacts on the board are damaged, it is a repair, not a cleaning. Same symptom, different jobs.
Can the original Game Boy screen be replaced or upgraded?
Sometimes, but original Game Boy screen work is quoted rather than sold as a standard kit price. Board revision, available parts, and what you want it to look like all change the path. I will say whether a replacement or an upgrade is realistic once I know the unit.
Can the Game Boy shell be replaced?
Yes. GB shell swaps start at $50 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell). Aftermarket shells fit differently, so the quote still follows the shell and the system in front of me.
Are Game Boy power issues always caused by the battery contacts?
No. Contacts are one of the first things I look at, especially after a leak, but the power switch, the board, and the batteries themselves can cause the same “dead” symptom. Older hardware often has more than one age-related failure point.

Game Boy Color
Why won’t my Game Boy Color turn on?
This can sometimes indicate batteries, a worn power switch, or corrosion on the contacts. GBC units also show up with tired packs and dirty internals that look the same from the outside. Inspection is what separates a cheap fix from a board problem.
Why does my Game Boy Color only power on intermittently?
A dirty or failing power switch is one of the things I would check, along with tired batteries and corrosion that only connects at certain angles. Intermittent startup is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. Photos of the battery bay still help.
What should I do if batteries leaked inside my Game Boy Color?
Remove the leaking cells and do not keep powering it on. Leak damage can stay on the contacts or travel further onto the board. How far it went decides whether this is a cleaning or a deeper repair.
Why is there no sound from the Game Boy Color speaker?
The speaker, the headphone switch, or the audio path on the board can all go quiet. If headphones also have no sound, that points further in than a dead speaker alone. I will not pick one of those from a description only.
Why does Game Boy Color sound work through headphones but not the speaker?
That often points at the headphone switch thinking something is plugged in, or at the speaker itself. It is a useful split, but there are still a few possible causes. Mention whether you hear a click when you insert headphones.
Why do Game Boy Color games freeze or fail to load?
A dirty slot, a worn connector, a dirty cart, or a failing save chip can all look like a bad game. Try to note whether it happens on one cart or several. I do not assume the handheld is the only problem.
Why are the Game Boy Color buttons sticky or unresponsive?
Sugar, dirt, a worn membrane, or a shell that is sitting tight can all do this. Sticky and completely dead are different clues. If the board pads are damaged, cleaning the buttons will not be enough.
Why is the Game Boy Color screen blank, faint, or damaged?
A blank or faint screen can be the panel, a ribbon, or a power issue. Lines and cracks usually mean the screen itself. There are a few possible causes, and a screen upgrade is a different conversation from repairing what is already there.
Can the original Game Boy Color screen be upgraded?
Often, yes. A GBC screen upgrade starts at $90 (that price includes the screen) when a kit fits the board. Whether an upgrade is the right call depends on the board and what you want it to look like.
Can the Game Boy Color shell be replaced?
Yes. GBC shell swaps start at $50 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell). Aftermarket shells fit differently, so the quote still follows the shell and the system in front of me.
Can power-switch problems cause intermittent startup on a Game Boy Color?
Yes. A worn or dirty power switch is one of the common reasons a GBC only starts sometimes. It is not the only reason — batteries and corrosion can look the same — so inspection may still be needed.

GBA / GBA SP
Why won’t my GBA turn on?
No power can be the switch, the battery or pack, a fuse area, or something further on the board. An SP that charges but will not boot is a different clue than one that is completely dead. I will not pick one cause from a message alone.
Why does my GBA SP shut off unexpectedly?
A dirty power switch, a failing battery, or a board that loses power under load can all do this. How it fails — a bump, a few minutes, or when a cartridge is inserted — helps narrow it down. Inspection may still be needed.
Why won’t my GBA SP charge?
That can be the pack, the charge port, the cable, or the power circuit. A port that wiggles or a pack that is swollen is useful to mention. Power work on GB through SP is quoted from what I find.
Why does the GBA SP battery die quickly?
Aging packs lose capacity, but a system that is drawing extra power can look the same. Swelling is a reason to stop using the pack. I treat “dies quickly” as a starting clue, not a guaranteed battery-only job.
Why is the GBA screen dim or damaged?
Front-lit and aftermarket screens fail in different ways. Dim can be the light or the panel. Lines and cracks usually mean a replacement. A repair and a brighter upgrade are not the same job.
Can the GBA or GBA SP screen be upgraded?
Yes, when a kit matches the board. GBA starts at $90 (that price includes the screen) and GBA SP at $100 (that price includes the screen). I will say if a brighter panel is realistic or if a like-for-like repair is the better path.
Can a GBA SP get a modern IPS-style screen?
Often, yes, when an IPS kit fits that SP board. An IPS-style upgrade starts in the same screen-upgrade range and is quoted if the kit or labor is more involved. I will not promise a specific kit until I know the unit and what you want it to look like.
What’s the difference between repairing a GBA screen and upgrading it?
A repair puts the system back to a working display, often like-for-like. An upgrade is for a brighter, clearer panel when the board can take a kit. If the current screen still works, you may not need a repair at all — that is an upgrade request.
Why do some GBA buttons require extra pressure?
Worn membranes, dirty pads, or a shell that is too tight are common. Shoulder buttons are their own mechanism and often fail separately from the face buttons. I will not assume a cleaning will fix every stiff button.
Why do the GBA shoulder buttons stop responding?
Shoulder buttons wear, get dirty, or lose the small parts that give them travel. This can sometimes be a clean and sometimes a replacement. I will not know which until it is open.
Why is there no sound on my GBA?
Crackling, missing channels, or silence can be the speaker, the headphone jack, or the board. An SP and a standard GBA are not the same teardown. Audio repairs are quoted.
Can the GBA or GBA SP shell be replaced?
Yes. A GBA shell swap is $30 labor plus the shell (that $30 is labor only), because shell prices are not stable enough for a fixed total. GBA SP shell swaps start at $65 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell).
Can a GBA SP play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games?
Yes. A GBA or GBA SP can play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges natively, along with GBA games. That is different from a DS Lite, which plays GBA carts but not original GB or GBC carts. Find Your Handheld can sort this if you are still picking a handheld.

DS / DS Lite
Why does my DS Lite power on, flash, then shut off?
On a DS Lite, a quick screen flash followed by shutdown can sometimes mean one of the displays is not being detected correctly. Which screen flashes can help narrow down where to look, but there are still multiple possible causes. If you submit a repair request, include which screen flashes and whether the system has been opened before.
Why does only one DS screen flash before shutdown?
Which screen flashes can help narrow down a display or ribbon that is not being seen. A top-screen cable and a bottom-screen or digitizer fault are different jobs. I still will not treat a flash-and-die as one guaranteed repair from a photo alone.
What can a broken DS Lite hinge cause?
A broken hinge can crack the shell, pinch or tear a screen ribbon, or leave a display flickering until the lid moves. The visible break is not always the only damage. This is one of the things I would check, along with whether the screens still initialize.
Can a broken DS Lite hinge be repaired?
Often, yes. The shell, the hinge barrel, and whether the ribbons were stressed all matter. A reshell starts at $40 on a DS Lite (that starting price includes an average replacement shell) when the donor system is complete and working.
Why is the DS Lite touchscreen inaccurate or not responding?
That is often the digitizer, which starts at $20 (that price includes a typical digitizer) and may cost less when bundled with a reshell. A bottom-screen replacement normally needs a new digitizer as well. Calibration issues and a physically damaged digitizer are not the same job.
Why is one DS screen dim, damaged, or showing lines?
Top and bottom screens are different jobs. A DS Lite top screen starts at $60 (that price includes the screen). Bottom-screen work is quoted and usually includes a new digitizer. Dim, lines, and cracks are useful to mention because they are not always the same repair.
Why won’t my DS or DS Lite charge?
A tired pack, a dirty charge port, or a power fault on the board can all look the same from the outside. Photos of the port and any swelling help. This is usually quoted after a look.
Why does the DS Lite battery die quickly?
Aging packs lose capacity, but a system that will not sleep correctly or is struggling to stay on can look similar. Swelling is a reason to stop using the pack. I will not assume a battery swap is the whole story until I see the unit.
Why are DS buttons or shoulder buttons not responding?
Face buttons and shoulders fail for different reasons: membranes, dirt, or a shell that has shifted after a drop. I will not assume a cleaning will fix it. Tell me which buttons fail and whether the hinge or shell is also damaged.
Why won’t my DS read a DS cartridge?
Dirty pins, a worn slot, or a dirty cart can all cause this. On a Lite, the DS and GBA slots are separate, so tell me which slot fails. I do not provide commercial ROM libraries as a workaround.
Can the original DS or DS Lite shell be replaced?
Yes. Original DS reshells start at $45 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell) and DS Lite at $40 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell), assuming a complete working system.
Can I upgrade or configure an R4 card on a DS Lite?
Yes. DS / DS Lite flash-cart setup is $40 (that is setup for a cart you already own). Extra emulator setup is quoted from what you want configured. Commercial ROM libraries are not provided.
Can a DS Lite play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games?
Not as original GB or GBC cartridges. A DS Lite has a GBA slot, not a Game Boy slot. Game Boy and Game Boy Color libraries can sometimes be added through software or flash-cart setup, which is different from native cartridge support. Find Your Handheld can help if that mix of games is the goal.
Can a DS Lite play Game Boy Advance games?
Yes. A DS Lite can play GBA cartridges natively in the bottom slot, along with DS games. That is one reason a Lite is a strong fit when you want both libraries in cart form.
Can a DS Lite play 3DS games?
No. A DS Lite cannot play 3DS software. Native 3DS games need a 2DS or 3DS-family system. If Ocarina of Time 3D or other 3DS titles are the goal, start there or use Find Your Handheld.
Can I use emulators on a DS Lite?
Often, yes, through a flash cart and software you are allowed to use. Game Boy, GBC, GBA, NES, Genesis, and Atari setups can be discussed. SNES is not a standard, guaranteed configuration because performance has not been reliable enough to promise.

DSi
Why won’t my DSi turn on?
A dead or tired pack, a charge issue, or a board fault can all present as no power. Whether any light comes on is a useful clue. DSi parts are their own, so I will not treat it like a DS Lite by default.
Why won’t my DSi charge?
That can be the pack, the charge port, the cable, or the board. Photos of the port and any battery swelling are useful. DSi power faults are quoted.
Why is the orange charging light blinking on my DSi?
A blinking charge light can sometimes indicate a failing battery, a poor connection at the pack, or a charge-circuit problem. It is a useful clue, not a guaranteed diagnosis. I would rather see the unit than guess from the light alone.
Why does the DSi battery die quickly?
Aging packs lose capacity, but a system that is not sleeping or is struggling elsewhere can look the same. Swelling is a reason to stop using the pack. Power work is quoted from what I find.
Why are there lines, blotches, or damage on a DSi screen?
Lines, blotches, and cracks are usually the panel, but a ribbon or prior opening can cause similar symptoms. Top and bottom screens are different jobs. Bottom-screen work normally includes a new digitizer.
Why is the DSi touchscreen not responding correctly?
This can sometimes indicate a worn digitizer, a damaged bottom screen, or a unit that was opened before. Inaccurate and completely dead are different clues. Inspection may still be needed.
Why are the DSi buttons sticky or not responding?
Dirt, a worn membrane, or a shell that has shifted can all do this. Face buttons and shoulders are not the same repair. I will not assume a cleaning will fix every unresponsive button.
Why won’t my DSi recognize my game card?
Dirty pins, a worn slot, or a dirty card can all cause this. A DSi does not have a GBA slot, so this is the DS-style card slot only. I do not provide commercial ROM libraries as a workaround.
Why won’t my DSi recognize my SD card?
The card, the format, the adapter, or the SD slot can all fail in the same way. Try to note the card size and whether another device reads it. Storage questions are part of many software setups and are quoted with that work when needed.
Can the DSi shell or outer housing be replaced?
Sometimes. DSi shells are their own parts and are not always easy to source in the color you want. This is quoted from availability and how much of the housing actually needs replacement.
Can I set up homebrew or other software on a DSi?
Often, yes, using software you are allowed to use. DSi setup is quoted from the model and what you want configured. I do not provide commercial ROM libraries.
What should I do if my DSi has already been opened?
Tell me before I start. Prior work can mean missing screws, mixed screens, or a ribbon that was already stressed. It does not automatically mean I will turn it down, but the quote has to follow what is actually inside.

2DS / 3DS
Why won’t my 2DS or 3DS power on?
A dead pack, a charge issue, or a board fault can all present as no power. Whether any light comes on is a useful clue. I will not treat every dead 3DS as the same repair.
Why does the blue light come on but the screens stay blank?
This can sometimes indicate a screen, a ribbon, or a board problem. There are several possible causes, and they need the unit opened. Photos of both screens help a little; they do not replace inspection.
Why does my 2DS or 3DS power on and then shut off?
A failing battery, a dirty power area, or a screen that is causing the system to halt can all look like this. I will ask what lights you see and whether it happens immediately or after a moment. Inspection may still be needed.
Why won’t my 2DS or 3DS charge?
That can be the cable, the port, the pack, or the board. A loose port and a pack that never takes a charge are different clues. Power work is quoted from what I find.
Why does the 3DS battery die quickly?
Packs wear out, but a system that is not sleeping or is struggling elsewhere can look the same. Swelling is a reason to stop using the pack. I will not assume a battery swap is the whole job from a message alone.
Why is the 2DS or 3DS touchscreen not responding?
This is often the digitizer. A 2DS digitizer starts at $25 (that price includes a typical digitizer), and a 3DS XL digitizer starts at $25 (that price includes a typical digitizer). A bottom-screen replacement normally needs a new digitizer as well.
Can the 3DS top screen be replaced?
Yes on the jobs I take. A 3DS XL top screen starts at $85 (that price includes the screen) because the teardown is more involved. 2DS wedge screens are a different part and start at $70 (that price includes the screen and digitizer).
Can the 3DS bottom screen be replaced?
Yes. A 3DS XL bottom screen starts at $50 (that price includes the screen, a new digitizer, and labor). A new digitizer is normally part of bottom-screen work on 2DS and 3DS-family systems.
Why is my Circle Pad or button not responding correctly?
Circle Pads wear, collect dust, or sit wrong after a drop. Face buttons can be membranes or a shell issue. Same complaints, different parts — tell me which control is failing.
Can the 2DS or 3DS shell or frame be replaced?
Often, yes. 2DS reshells are labor starting at $30 plus the shell (that $30 is labor only), and those shells can be hard to source. A 3DS XL full shell and frame starts at $65 (that starting price includes typical shell and frame pieces) and depends on which pieces actually need replacement.
Can the 3DS XL outer plates be replaced separately?
Yes. 3DS XL outer plates start at $35 (that starting price includes typical plate parts). That is the simpler cosmetic plate job, not a full inner-frame replacement.
Can you set up homebrew or emulators on a 2DS or 3DS?
Yes. 2DS / 3DS software setup starts at $50 (that is setup labor). Emulators and extra configuration are discussed separately based on what you want. I do not provide commercial ROM libraries.
What size SD card can I use in a 3DS?
I can talk through a size that fits the library you want. Official support is conservative; larger cards can work when they are formatted correctly. I do not sell a catalog of cards as a store — storage is quoted with the setup.
Can a 3DS play DS games?
Yes. A 2DS or 3DS-family system can play DS cartridges natively. It cannot play GBA cartridges in a slot the way a DS Lite can. Native support and emulator-based libraries are not the same thing.
Can a 3DS play Game Boy Advance games?
Not as GBA cartridges. A 3DS-family system has no GBA slot. GBA software can sometimes be part of a software or emulator setup you are allowed to use, which is different from native cart support. A DS Lite is the usual native answer for DS plus GBA carts.
Can a 3DS play Ocarina of Time 3D?
Yes. The 3D version needs a 2DS or 3DS-family system. A DS Lite cannot play it. If you are still choosing a handheld around that title, Find Your Handheld is a useful starting point.
What’s the difference between native compatibility and emulator-based compatibility on a 3DS?
Native means the system was built to run that cartridge or official software — DS carts on a 3DS, for example. Emulation is extra software that can add other libraries, with results that vary by system and title. I will keep those two paths separate when we talk through a setup.

PSP
Why won’t my PSP turn on?
A dead or swollen battery, a charge issue, or a board fault can all look like a dead PSP. Whether it shows any light on the charger is a useful split. Inspection may still be needed.
Why does my PSP only work when plugged into power?
That often points at the pack. A PSP battery replacement is $15 (that price includes a typical replacement battery) when the rest of the system is otherwise fine. If it still fails on a known-good pack, the problem is further in.
Why won’t the PSP battery hold a charge?
Packs wear out and can swell. A typical replacement is $15 (that price includes a typical replacement battery). If the system also has charge-port or board trouble, that is a different quote.
Why won’t my PSP charge?
That can be the cable, the port, the pack, or the board. If it works on a known-good charger and still will not take a charge, photos of the port help. I will not assume the battery is the only part involved.
Why is the PSP screen damaged, dim, or blank?
Cracks, lines, and a backlight that never comes on are different clues. The panel, the cable, or power to the display can all look like a blank screen. A standard replacement and an IPS upgrade are not the same job.
Can you replace a PSP screen?
Yes. A PSP-1000 standard LCD starts at $35 (that price includes the screen). A PSP-3000 LCD starts at $45 (that price includes the screen).
Can a PSP-1000 get an IPS screen upgrade?
Yes. A PSP-1000 IPS upgrade starts at $55 (that includes the screen cost). It can need extra adapters and/or soldering compared with a standard LCD swap.
What’s the difference between a standard PSP screen replacement and an IPS upgrade?
A standard swap puts a typical LCD back in the system. An IPS upgrade is a brighter, clearer panel and can involve extra adapters or soldering, especially on a PSP-1000. If the current screen still works, you may only want the upgrade path.
Why is the PSP analog stick drifting?
Sticks wear and collect grit under the cap. Drift can sometimes be a clean and sometimes a replacement. I will not assume a blast of air will fix a stick that has been drifting for a long time.
Why are PSP buttons or shoulder buttons not responding?
Face buttons can be a membrane or a shell that has shifted. Shoulders wear separately. Same “it won’t click” complaint, different parts — tell me which controls fail.
Can the PSP shell be replaced?
Yes. PSP-1000 reshells start at $80 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell) and PSP-3000 at $75 (that starting price includes an average replacement shell). Final pricing varies with the shell you want.
Can you set up PSP software or homebrew?
Yes, using software you are allowed to use. This is quoted from the model and what you want configured. Commercial game files are not part of the service.
Can PSP storage be upgraded?
Often, yes. Memory Stick or adapter setups depend on the model. I can talk through what you already have and what still needs to be sourced. There is no store catalog of cards on this site.
What size memory card or storage setup should I use for a PSP?
It depends on the model and how much you want to keep on the system. I can recommend a practical size once I know whether this is a few games, a media setup, or emulator storage. The card itself is quoted with the work, not sold as a catalog item.
Can a PSP be configured for emulators?
Often, yes, with software you are allowed to use. Results vary by system and title, so I will not promise every retro library will feel the same. Commercial ROM libraries are not provided.

PS Vita
Why won’t my PS Vita turn on?
A dead pack, a charge issue, or a board fault can all look like a dead Vita. Whether any light comes on is a useful clue. Vita hardware jobs are quoted — start a request and I will tell you if it is work I can take.
Why won’t my Vita charge?
That can be the cable, the port, the pack, or the board. Photos of the port help. I do not treat Vita charging as a flat-rate repair; request a quote and I will say what I can do.
Why does the Vita screen stay black?
This can sometimes indicate the display, the digitizer stack, or a system that is powering on without a picture. A light or sound while the screen stays dark is a useful detail. Hardware repairs are quoted rather than listed as a stocked, flat price.
Why is the Vita analog stick drifting?
Sticks wear and collect grit. Drift can be the stick module or something around it. Vita analog work is quoted; I will tell you if it is a job I can take after I know the model and the symptom.
Why are the Vita buttons not responding?
Face buttons, shoulders, and the rear touch pad are different parts. Dirt, wear, or a prior opening can all look like a dead button. This is quoted with the rest of the Vita hardware request.
Why won’t my Vita recognize storage or a memory card?
Official cards, adapters, and software setup can all fail in the same way. Note whether this is an official card or an SD adapter. Storage and software setup can often be discussed together; hardware slot damage is a separate quote.
Can the Vita screen or touchscreen be replaced?
Sometimes, and those jobs are quoted. I am not going to pretend every Vita screen is a stocked, flat-rate repair. Start a request and I will tell you if it is work I can take.
Can the Vita battery be replaced?
Often that is possible, and it is quoted. A swollen pack should be treated as a safety issue, not just a weak battery. Request a quote and include whether the system still powers on at all.
What is SD2Vita?
SD2Vita is an adapter that lets a Vita use a microSD card for storage instead of relying only on official memory cards. It is a hardware adapter plus a software setup, not a store catalog of cards. I do not provide game libraries on the card.
Can you set up SD2Vita?
Yes, as part of Vita software setup. That work starts at $50 (that includes an SD adapter, not a microSD card). You can provide a microSD card or ask me to source one as a quoted extra.
Can you help with PS Vita software or homebrew setup?
Yes. PS Vita software setup starts at $50 (that includes an SD adapter, not a microSD card). Commercial ROM libraries are not provided.
Why does my Vita freeze or crash?
That can be storage, software, a failing pack, or a hardware fault. Whether it happens in the live area, in one app, or as soon as it boots helps. I will not diagnose a freeze as one cause from a message; request a quote and tell me when it happens.

Software / flash carts
What is an R4 card?
An R4 is a flash cart that sits in a DS or DS Lite game slot and reads software from an SD card. I can configure a cart you already own, or talk through sourcing one. I do not provide unauthorized commercial game libraries.
What can an R4 card do?
It can load homebrew, tools, and software you are allowed to use, and it is often the base for emulator or e-reader setup on a DS-family system. What it can do well depends on the cart, the firmware, and the handheld. The setup is quoted from what you actually want configured.
What systems can I emulate on a DS or DS Lite?
Setups I am willing to discuss include Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, Genesis, and Atari, plus library organization and DS Libris. Results vary, and a DS Lite can also play DS and GBA cartridges natively. SNES is not a standard, guaranteed configuration.
Can I set up Game Boy emulation?
Yes, on a flash-cart or software setup where that library makes sense. This is configuration of software you are allowed to use, not a commercial ROM pack. Tell me which handheld you have and whether you already own the cart or SD card.
Can I set up Game Boy Color emulation?
Yes. GBC is one of the emulator setups I am comfortable discussing on a DS-family flash cart or a 2DS / 3DS software setup. Performance still depends on the handheld and the titles. Commercial ROM libraries are not provided.
Can I set up Game Boy Advance emulation?
Sometimes, depending on the handheld. A DS Lite can also play GBA cartridges natively, which is a different path from emulation. On systems without a GBA slot, GBA software setup can be discussed separately and is not promised to feel identical to a real GBA.
Can I set up NES emulation?
Yes, NES is one of the retro setups I will discuss. It is still software configuration, so results can vary by title and handheld. I do not provide a commercial NES library.
Can I set up Genesis emulation?
Yes, Genesis can be part of a flash-cart or handheld software setup you are allowed to use. Some titles are happier than others. I will not promise every game will feel the same.
Can I set up Atari emulation?
Yes, Atari is on the list of setups I will talk through. It is usually a lighter ask than later 16-bit libraries, but I still treat it as configuration rather than a guaranteed catalog. You provide the software you are allowed to use.
What about SNES?
I do not treat SNES as a standard, guaranteed configuration on DS-family setups. Performance has not been reliable enough for me to promise a smooth experience. If SNES is the main goal, I would rather say that plainly than sell it as a sure thing.
Why does SNES performance vary?
SNES is a heavier system to emulate on DS-class hardware, so some titles chug, drop frames, or need tweaks that still do not feel great. That is why I do not list it as a standard setup. If you still want to experiment, we can talk about expectations first.
Can you organize my game or library layout?
Yes. Folder structure, naming, and how titles show up on the cart or handheld are part of many setups. Send a note about how you want to browse the library. I organize what you provide; I do not add unauthorized commercial games.
Can you set up DS Libris as an e-reader?
Yes. DS Libris is one of the software options I will configure on a DS-family flash cart. Tell me if you already have books or files you want loaded. I do not provide copyrighted book dumps as a library.
Can you configure a flash cart I already own?
Yes. Bring the cart and tell me what you want on it. DS / DS Lite flash-cart setup is $40 (that is setup for a cart you already own) when that is the job. Extra emulator or media setup is quoted from what you actually want.
Do I need to provide my own SD card?
You can, and that is often the simplest path. You can also ask me to source one. Card size and the setup you want change the quote. I do not sell a store catalog of cards on this site.
What size SD card should I use?
It depends on the handheld and how much you want to keep on it. A small card is enough for a tight library; larger cards make more sense for media or a lot of homebrew. I will recommend a practical size once I know the system and the goal.
What is the difference between native compatibility and emulation?
Native means the handheld was built to run that cartridge or official software — a DS Lite playing DS and GBA carts, or a 3DS playing 3DS and DS carts. Emulation is extra software that can add other libraries, with results that vary. I keep those two paths separate so a recommendation does not overpromise.
Do all emulators run equally well?
No. Some libraries are a comfortable fit on a given handheld and others are not. That is why Game Boy, NES, or Genesis might be a reasonable conversation while SNES is not something I will guarantee on a DS-family setup. I would rather set that expectation up front.
Can you set up similar emulators on a 2DS or 3DS?
Yes. 2DS / 3DS software setup starts at $50 (that is setup labor), and emulator options can be discussed from there. A 3DS-family system is also the native path for 3DS software, which a DS Lite cannot do. Commercial ROM libraries are not provided.
Can you help me figure out what setup fits the games I want to play?
Yes. Tell me the games or systems you care about, or start with Find Your Handheld and carry that into a request. I will separate native cartridge support from software or flash-cart options so the recommendation stays honest.
Can a DS Lite play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges?
No. The DS Lite GBA slot does not take original GB or GBC cartridges. Those libraries can sometimes be added through software setup, which is emulation, not native cart support. A GBA or GBA SP is the native handheld for GB, GBC, and GBA carts.
Can a DS Lite play GBA cartridges?
Yes. A DS Lite plays GBA cartridges natively, along with DS games. That combination is one of the reasons a Lite comes up so often in Find Your Handheld.
Can a 3DS play DS games?
Yes. A 2DS or 3DS-family system plays DS cartridges natively. It does not play GBA cartridges in a slot, and a DS Lite cannot play 3DS games in the other direction.
Can a 3DS play 3DS games?
Yes. Native 3DS software needs a 2DS or 3DS-family system. A DS, DS Lite, or DSi will not run it. If a specific 3DS title is the reason you are shopping, start there.
Can a DS Lite play 3DS games?
No. 3DS software needs a 3DS-family handheld. A DS Lite is a strong native fit for DS and GBA carts, not for 3DS titles.
Can a 3DS play GBA games?
Not as GBA cartridges. There is no GBA slot on a 3DS. GBA software can sometimes be discussed as a software or emulator setup, which is not the same as sliding in a cart. For native DS plus GBA carts, a DS Lite is the usual answer.
Can a Game Boy play DS games?
No. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware cannot run DS software. If DS games are the goal, you need a DS-family or 3DS-family handheld.
What handheld do I need for Ocarina of Time 3D?
Ocarina of Time 3D needs a 2DS or 3DS-family system. A DS Lite cannot play it. If you also want GBA cartridges in the same pocket, that is a different native handheld — Find Your Handheld can walk through that tradeoff.
What handheld makes sense if I want to play both DS and GBA games?
An original DS or DS Lite can play both as cartridges. A 3DS can play DS carts natively but not GBA carts. If you want a recommendation from games and budget instead of a parts list, use Find Your Handheld.
Will you install a library of commercial games?
No. I can help configure homebrew, a flash cart you own, and software you are allowed to use. I do not provide pirated ROM libraries or copyrighted commercial games.

Custom cartridges
What is a custom cartridge?
A cart built or programmed for a specific homebrew, ROM hack, or original project you are allowed to use. Pricing depends on the system, the hardware, game size, and save type. I do not sell unauthorized commercial game libraries.
What is a ROM hack cartridge?
A cartridge programmed with a community or fan modification of a game you have the right to use, or a similar allowed project — not a boxed commercial reprint. GBA ROM-hack carts are one of the builds I do most often. I do not distribute unauthorized commercial game libraries.
Can you make GB or GBC custom cartridges?
Yes. GB / GBC custom cartridges are typically $15–$20 (that is typically the cartridge hardware, before shipping). The final number still depends on the hardware and the game.
Can you make GBA ROM-hack cartridges?
Yes. Custom GBA cartridges start at $45, with discounted pricing available for bundles of up to five cartridges. All listed bundle prices include standard shipping within the United States. International orders are welcome, with shipping quoted separately. That assumes a typical GBA ROM-hack build. Not every ROM or game is automatically supported. Odd hardware or save requirements can change it. The tier prices are on Services & Pricing.
Why do some cartridges cost more than others?
System, board, game size, save type, and whether a battery is required all change the hardware. A small GB homebrew cart is a different build from a large GBA project with battery-backed saving. I price the parts the project actually needs.
Does cartridge size matter?
Yes. Larger games need boards that can hold them, and that can change both parts and price. If you know the ROM size or the project name, send that with the request so I am not guessing.
Do save requirements affect cartridge compatibility?
They can. Some projects expect SRAM, flash, or a battery-backed save, and the wrong board will boot but not save. This is one of the things I check before I build. Tell me if saving matters for the project.
What is battery-backed saving?
Some carts keep save data alive with a small battery on the board. When that cell dies, the game may still play and then lose saves. I can build new carts with the right save hardware, and I can also replace save batteries on existing carts.
Can you make a cartridge for an original or custom game project?
Yes, when it is your project or software you are allowed to use. That is a good fit for homebrew, class projects, and small games. Send the system, the file size if you know it, and whether it needs to save.
Can you make labels for custom cartridges?
Often, yes. Labels are quoted with the cart build and depend on artwork you provide or ask me to work from. I will not reproduce official commercial packaging.
Can custom cartridge pricing vary by hardware requirements?
Yes. Boards, save chips, batteries, and shells are not all the same cost. The listed GBA and GB starting points assume a typical build. Unusual hardware is a quote.
Can I request multiple cartridges at once?
Yes. GBA ROM-hack pricing already has a small-quantity scale, and other systems can be quoted as a set. Tell me how many you want and whether they are the same project or mixed.
Can you replace a cartridge save battery?
Yes. Starting prices are $15 for one, $25 for two, $35 for three, $40 for four, and $50 for five (those starting prices include a typical save battery).
